Historic CCC Trail Reconstruction

April 8, 2006
Many thanks to Dave Nelson who spearheaded this project. The goal of this work day was to reconstruct a section of the original CCC trail, at Devil's Toenail rapid. This trail was built in the 1930's, one of many CCC projects in the park from that time using rock work. In a historical context, the trail was intended to be appropriate for all park users. Over time, rocks had fallen from above into the tread, crib walls on the outside of the trail had fallen away, and erosion was taking its toll. The degradation of the trail made it technically fun for bikers but takes away from the intent of the original trail, which is for all user groups. Hence, restoration work to bring it back closer to the original trail.

Thanks to everyone who helped. Mike Brixey, Dave Nelson, Bryan Conn, Scott Bowie, Ken Hoffman and Penny Schwyn from the FTTRC, and the Airmen of the 92d Maintenance Operations Squadron Fairchild AFB: Geof Nieboer, Christopher Williams, Mark Bergeron, and Todd Berliner.
The 92nd MOS officially adopted the section of CCC trail from Bowl and Pitcher to 7 Mile.

Armoring the upper section:

Bringing in dirt. The dirt came from a berm that was knocked down elsewhere.

Rebuilding the crib wall:

Breaking down the berm; creating an outslope where the trail was gullied.
